The people of one of Africa's remaining monarchies, the Kingdom of Lesotho, went to elections in the past week in which about seven political parties took part.

The Democratic Congress failed to scoop absolute majority this time around, and there are reports that five opposition parties are forming a coalition towards a government to take the country forward. They stand to become the majority party, if their plan comes to fruition.

According to the SADC Electoral Observer Mission to Lesotho, the elections were held in a free and fair atmosphere, although there were complaints of unfair media coverage by both state-owned and private media, non-use of the National Identity card for identification during registration, and shortage of ballot boxes at some polling stations  According to the SADC report, state media has been partial to the ruling party while the private media is polarised but generally sympathetic to opposition parties.
