Wake up to the recession, help workers

The initial reaction of Botswana to the deepening global recession might have lulled the nation into a false sense of security.

It is amazing that only as late as this week, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Baledzi Gaolathe, announced his intention to slash a good part of the budget allocations he proposed just two weeks ago.

At the onset of the potentially devastating recession, some North American publications went as far as to urge their financial organisations to learn from Botswana, which gave the impression of being immune to the crunch.
