Sacrificing state theatre shows disdain for the arts

When government diverted a total of P62.1 million from the Department of Arts and Culture to patch up shoddy jobs at three stadiums in Serowe, Lobatse and Francistown last week, it once again confirmed its long held saddening view of the arts and culture in this country.

Our government has a skewed view of the arts and the creative industries in general. Given that the arts are mostly the business of young people, and government is operated, at least at its highest levels, by people of a considerably earlier generation, the attitude the government has about the arts is not surprising. What is surprising, however, is the lack of sophistication of mind to recognise the impact that decisions regarding the arts may have.

We should be worried enough that we are way behind other nations when it comes to the development of the arts.
