Public broadcasting is long overdue

This week Kgatleng East MP, Isaac Mabiletsa took to the podium to introduce a motion which seeks to turn the government-sponsored media into public broadcasters.

This is a laudable and long-overdue effort. Public broadcasting plays an invaluable role in the free flow of ideas and debate to ensure an informed citizenry that can duly participate in the political process.

Further to that, this is a model known for paying particular attention to minorities and their viewpoints while ensuring universal accessibility.  Public broadcasters also reflect the diversity of values in the audiences they serve, not the government of the day. The model distances itself from vested interest emphasising content that liberates programmers to serve the public good, free of commercial and political restrictions.
