Illegal gatherings to attract P5,000 fine

The Proposed Gaborone City Council byelaw that seeks to illegalise gatherings of 50 or more people without a permit, has caused panic across the political spectrum.

Both the ruling Party followers and the opposition, and churches fear the byelaw, whatever its intention, would be draconian and would not serve the public interest.Interestingly the proposed byelaw does not target private parties, but supports organised events, including weddings, funerals, churches.

Now there is concern that the proposed law could end up disturbing the peace and tranquillity of Batswana as it interferes with their cultural way of conducting affairs.One only has to consider weddings and  family bereavements where people are not formerly invited but come in droves to mourn with the bereaved, and to extend a helping hand in an hour of need.
