Domestic Violence Bill Could Make Or Break Us

The new Domestic Violence Bill can either make us or break us. One could easily tell by the way Dikgosi responded after Member of Parliament (MP) for Kweneng South, Gladys Kokorwe presented the draft of the bill to them.

The chiefs had so many questions and the answers they got were just not good enough because they would ask the same question many times seeking clarification.

As for the chiefs demanding consultation before bills are passed, they are right on the money, especially for laws that affect them as much as this one. Government should understand that in a country like Botswana where a dual legal system is in place, it would require a lot more consultation before implementing some laws than in other countries where things are less complicated. The bill obviously has loopholes hence so many issues were raised. It needs to be revisited and other things that affect Batswana should be considered. One aspect of this bill that seemed to get the chiefs scratching their heads was that of stalking.
