A clarion call to save Mmadikolo

For a while now, most serious observers of our education system have mourned the death of the University of Botswana as historically known.

UB was called Mmadikolo not in jest but as a serious reflection of the centrality of the institution to the transformation of our relatively nascent nation.

The university was founded on the principle of self-reliance and the visionary forebears of this country put an emphasis on a nation that would chart its course on the basis of self-analysis and self-criticism. UB would therefore not just be a place where future employees were developed, but rather and most importantly it would be the safe space where the freshest of ideas regarding the state of the nation would be interrogated. That space between the National Stadium to the north and Botswana Housing Corporation flats to the south would be populated by perspicuous people keen on intellectual engagement.
