Wheat shortage pushes up bread price

Bread prices have risen by about 40 percent since January driven by surging international wheat prices hitting hard on the pockets of the ordinary Motswana .

A loaf of bread was priced at P3.25 at the beginning of the year. It now costs P4.20 and industry officials say the price will be adjusted to P4.50 by November this year as demand continues to outstrip supply. Prices of other products made from wheat, such as macaroni and spaghetti, have also been affected.

The Chairman of the Millers Association of Botswana, Lazarus Lekgoanyana, who is also the Sales Manager at Bolux Milling, says they are unable to adjust to the ever-rising prices of wheat. Lekgoanyana is concerned that Canada, from where the local market buys quality wheat, continues to hike prices.
