SELEBI-PHIKWE: Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Kago Moshashane faces a stern test in his new role as the Selebi-Phikwe Diversification Programme Coordinator.

Moshashane takes over from Disikalala Gaseitsiwe who has been the programme's acting coordinator. The appointment comes at a time when confidence in Selebi-Phikwe has been dented by the government's failure to announce a bailout package for the ailing mining industry. Besides, Selebi-Phikwe is still waiting for clarification after the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Baledzi Gaolathe failed to mention the construction of Selebi-Phikwe College of Applied Arts in budget speech.

The mining town has been hard hit by the current global economic downturn, with the operations of BCL mine severely affected. The mine was forced to scale down its workforce by seven percent and has adopted stringent fiscal measures to keep afloat.
