Modern technological advances were meant to reshape businesses but unfortunately, are now the incentives of fraud, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Kenneth Matambo has said. Speaking at the Botswana Institute of Bankers Annual dinner held last week, Matambo said as more sophisticated technologies are adopted to execute financial transactions, criminals are also devising new and more complex approaches in perpetrating fraud. He said the impact of fraud on any bank has a negative impact on long-term customer confidence.

"The impact of successful fraud discourages members from saving with the banks, and undermines their confidence in the banking system, which in turn impacts negatively on the banks' ability to perform their intermediation function," he explained.

Matambo said despite the challenges posed by financial fraud to businesses, it is apparent that the Botswana banking sector has been able to avert the fraud challenge. The bank of Botswana has regulatory and supervisory interventions, which promote sound operational risk management in banks.
