Suzuki strives on smaller cars

HAMAMATSU, Japan: One of Japan's carmakers, Suzuki said Friday that unlike its peers in the auto industry, the global downturn has not severely impacted on them because of their focus on mini and compact motor vehicles which are a hit in the domestic market.

Asia's auto industry faces a dramatic slowdown in 2009 as the global financial crisis puts the brakes on sales, with Japan hit hard by weakening demand in the US and Europe.

However, in a visit to the Kosai plant, Suzuki's biggest plant, it was business as usual and the company's officials said even though they expect sales to slow down, the impact will be minimal as compared to other Japanese automakers like Toyota.
