Study finds two bank loans per borrower in Botswana

The debate around high household indebtedness was again stoked this week by an International Monetary Fund (IMF) survey finding that individuals with outstanding commercial bank credit in Botswana have an average of two such loans.

Published recently, the IMF's Financial Access Survey is the world's sole data source on global financial inclusion, access and usage on a comparative basis, with this year's edition covering 189 economies.

According to the 2013 edition, the number of household or individual borrowers with commercial banks in Botswana rose from 190,467 in 2011, to 264,305 last year while the number of loan accounts among these individuals rose from 541,600 to 588,938 over the same period.
