This weekend's signing of a bilateral agreement between Botswana and Namibia for the development of the US$11 billion Trans-Kalahari Railway (TKR) has been postponed after the western neighbours requested more time to finalise technicalities.

Although the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the TKR in 2009, the bilateral agreement will focus on cooperation and most importantly, pave way for the appointment of transaction advisers to lead the mammoth development.Transaction advisers will hand-hold the two governments in establishing a project office, developing a jointly owned company and ultimately selecting a private sector partner to take on the infrastructure development.

Yesterday, Transport and Communications officials confirmed to Mmegi Business that the signing would not take place in Windhoek as had been planned. The TKR is critical for the exports of coal and other commodities from eastern Botswana through Namibia."The signing will no longer take place this weekend and we will advise as soon as a date has been set," said ministry spokesperson, Kgomotso Makwati.Other government officials said minerals, energy and water resources minister, Kitso Mokaila was to have accompanied his transport and communications counterpart, Nonofo Molefhi to the signing.
