Ripple Effect Of Economic Recession Spreads In Botswana

Parliament has been told that the country has started to feel the pinch of the global economic meltdown with reduced activity in mining, manufacturing and tourism sectors.

Assistant Minister of Finance, Charles Tibone said this has had a ripple effect on other sectors, signified by the rise in unemployment, balance of payments and credit quality problems. There has been a decline in foreign exchange reserves.

Tibone was responding to a question from the MP for Boteti North, Slumber Tsogwane. The MP wanted the minister to state the impact of the global economic meltdown on poverty in the country.  He said the minister should further outline the pro-poor initiatives, if any, to mitigate against the worst case scenario.
