Households in most parts of the country woke up to a 'dark new day' as an unexpected power blackout occurred yesterday morning owing to faults along the line bringing electricity from South Africa.

In the capital, the daily morning traffic jams in and out of the city centre were reduced to tangled snarl-ups, stretching traffic police officers who are usually deployed at key intersections.

Yesterday marks the second time in three months that technical problems hit the strategic line from Matimba in South Africa to Phokoje outside Selebi-Phikwe that carries power imports.
