Orapa drilling reports large kimberlite

Following the granting of a new prospecting licence over an area of about 57 km, covering eight kimberlites in the Orapa kimberlite field ,diamond-mining and exploration company Tawana Resources, began drilling the prospect in September, with the aim of establishing the size of the known kimberlites.

Geophysical surveys conducted by Tawana have provided data which indicate that some of the known kimberlites may be larger than reported by previous explorers and that as yet undiscovered kimberlites may exist in the area.

The probable development by De Beers and Aim-listed African Diamonds of a new diamond mine in the Orapa area on the AK6 kimberlite, located 25 km to the south of the Tawana licence, which was originally discovered and evaluated in the 1970s and considered at that time to be a small, low-grade kimberlite, provides an indication of the potential that still remains in Botswana. It is also noteworthy that Firestone Diamond recently reported that the estimated size of the BK11 kimberlite, located 20 km south of the Tawana licence, had increased from 6.5 ha to 8 ha.
