With eight consultancy firms already short-listed to assist the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) with scoping works and management, the P500-million refurbishment of the 25-year-old Morupule Power Station is scheduled to begin in August.

The refurbishment is designed to restore the plant to a "dependable capacity" following a long period of poor performance by repairing at least three of its four 33-megawatt (MW) units that have been failing regularly, forcing BPC to implement a nationwide load shedding programme.

In an e-mailed response to Mmegi, BPC Public Relations Manager, Tlhomamiso Selato, says from the 18 firms that sent expressions of interest in the project, the utility has short-listed eight. "The short-listed consultants have been issued the Request For Proposal document," Selato says. "A pre-proposal and site visit meeting was held on 20th December 2010. Short-listed consultants are currently working on their proposals with closing date for submissions extended to 11 February 2011."
