Ministry warns meat sellers on halaal

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has said it is aware that supermarkets and chain stores are not complying with the regulation on marking and labelling of halaal and non-halaal meat and meat products.

The regulation requires that the marking and labelling of meat and meat products with the words 'halaal' and 'non-halaal' should be clear to enable customers to differentiate between them. Halaal and non-halaal products should be separated so that customers can easily identify them and to avoid contamination of non-halaal products by halaal ones. In a statement the ministry emphasised that the signs indicating whether a product is halaal or not should be clearly visible and in block letters.  "The ministry also appeals to supermarkets to separate the halaal meat and meat products from the non-halaal meat and meat products to avoid any contamination," the statement said. The ministry warned supermarkets, chain-stores and other meat outlets against discriminating supplies on the basis of halaal or non-halaal. Therefore the ministry said such a discrimination disadvantages other suppliers, "and hence businesses are advised to desist from this practice which is in contravention of the conditions under which the business licences were issued".
