FRANCISTOWN: The government is alive to the need of levelling the playing field in the domestic economy for local firms to compete fairly with each other, said the Minister of Trade and Industry Dorcus Makgato-Malesu.

She stated that the Competition Act, the Competition Commission and the Competition Authority (CA) have afforded businesses a near zero-cost and impartial dispute resolution system involving competitors and/or their customers.

"This is in line with the competition principles of fair business and trade practices," she said. Makgato-Malesu added that since the establishment of the CA in 2011, a number of anti-competitive practices have been unearthed. "A Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the CA and sector regulators such as the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board (PPADB), the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to join forces in combating anti-competitive practices affecting the economy, while negotiations are still on-going with other sector regulators," she said.
