Govt acts to contain world food shortages

Government is keeping a three-month buffer stock in the Strategic Grain Reserve as part of its short-term strategy to contain the food crisis that has set prices rocketing to unprecedented levels.

Responding to enquiries from Mmegi on contingency measures to tackle the shortages, Director of Crop Production in the Ministry of Agriculture Molatlhegi Modise said government was working on a number of strategies, which are all in line with the food security policy.

"The maintenance of the Strategic Grain Reserve serves as a buffer to stabilise unexpected shortages of major cereals. The Strategic Grain Reserve keeps stocks that would supply the country for up to three months.
