Formal sector employment up 9%

Overall employment in the formal sector has increased by 9 percent from 350,919 in December 2009 to 361, 267 persons in March 2010, figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate.

According to the Formal Sector Employment report for March, parastatals recorded the highest increase at 3.4 percent, followed by Local Government whose figure of 5.8 percent was boosted by the Ipelegeng programme.

"It should be noted that the Ipelegeng programme is seasonal, hence high fluctuations in the number employed from quarter to quarter," the report says.
