Farmers eye higher BMC prices

The 6, 000 plus farmers delivering cattle for slaughter at the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) abattoirs hope the record number of beasts delivered last year will translate into higher prices this year.

Producer prices rose by an average of 52 percent last year, with prices at the Lobatse abattoir in particular rising by 36 percent. Last year marked two years in a row that producer prices rose, with farmers earning an extra 11 percent on average in 2008.

Farmers participating in the Direct Purchase Scheme (DPS) benefited the most because the initiative targets young animals most favoured by export markets.
