The Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board (PPADB) has approved a request for a tender by the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources (MMEWR) to undertake an emergency procurement of petroleum products from the National Oil Company of Mozambique (PETROMOC) at an estimated cost of over 300 million Pula for a period of three months.

News of the approval follows an announcement by Minister Ponatshego Kedikilwe last week that the government has formulated plans for the first national oil company. During the trip he undertook to Mozambique last year when the country was experiencing fuel shortage as a result of a crippling strike by transport workers in South Africa, Kedikilwe was quoted as saying agreements were reached to supply oil products to Botswana through Francistown. He also disclosed that other supplies would be sourced from Namibia and stored in Ghanzi to supply Maun areas.

The fuel shortage resurfaced again in December last year just before the Christmas holidays causing panic among motorists with the looming possibility of a complete dry up in some places.  The recent shortage came as a result of maintenance shutdowns of some major refineries in South Africa where the country gets most of its fuel.
