In a bid to leave a lasting legacy, Debswana's major sustainability project, Cut 8, has taken on board 38 university graduates on an internship programme.

The group, whose areas include electrical, mechanical and building/civil engineering, will be attached to various companies on the construction aspect of the project. Officially welcoming interns at an induction session, Operational Readiness Manager, David Sebina, said the internship programme would help individuals to combine the theory learnt at school with practical work. "It is our view that Debswana's major projects provide opportunities for the country to build some capacity and in time (will) have sufficient numbers to resource projects with local labour," Sebina said. Cut 8 is the single-largest private sector project currently underway in Botswana.

Thus, Sebina urged the interns to take advantage of the attachment programmes because it offers them the privilege to witness and experience how big projects are executed in a real work situation. He added that resources developed through the Debswana internship programme were for the benefit of the country because the interns would remain with the acquired skills after Cut 8. A majority of the graduates have been unemployed for some time. The Operational Readiness Manager encouraged them to take their tasks seriously as this puts them at a competitive advantage compared to individuals who lack such work exposure.
