Botswana's transformation into an international diamond hub took its first major step last week with the signing of a ten-year diamond sales agreement with De Beers.

Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources signed on behalf of the government while Nicky Oppenheimer, De Beers chairman penned the deal for one of the world's top diamond producers.

In the previous three-year agreement, production from Debswana - an equally owned partnership between the two parties - sold all its average $3billion (P20.5 billion) rough diamonds per year to De Beers' subsidiary Diamond Trading Company (DTC).
