Cautious optimism reigns at diamond rally

The Managing Director of De Beers has pointed to rising unemployment, low expectations of holiday sales and the static price of polished goods in the US as compelling reasons for being cautious about the recovery of the diamond industry.

"Let us be cautious because it will take us a while to get out of the woods," Gareth Penny told a Diamond Town Hall Meeting in Gaborone on Tuesday.

He said despite significant improvement in the industry compared to the same period last year, the US market - the biggest for gemstones - remained nervous and hesitant, hence the industry should not celebrate the recovery of the global upturn yet.
