The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) could lease Morupule A power station to private developers under one of two options currently being considered to resurrect the mothballed 120 megawatt facility.

Available documents show that the other option the BPC has pitched to interested parties is the funding of the refurbishment by government with an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor spearheading the works.

Estimates provided two years ago indicated that the refurbishment of the 24-year-old power station could cost up to P500 million. This year, government allocated P160 million to revamp the aging power station, which was placed under care and maintenance last August. Two weeks ago, the BPC floated invitations for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the station's refurbishment, highlighting that interested developers could choose either or both options for consideration.
