Botswana still top diamond producer by value-KP

Diamonds dug in Botswana are still of the highest quality and the most valuable in the world, despite having cut down on production since 2009, data released this week by Kimberley Process (KP) show.

According to the KP, Botswana retained its perch as the top diamond producer by value in 2011 as the value of the gemstones dug in the country rose by 45 percent to P1,277.67 ($170.36) per carat in the year.

In the same year, Botswana mined 22.904 million carats valued at $3.9 billion. However, Russia was the top producer by volume in the year with output of 35.139 million carats valued at $2.67 billion, as the average price of its production rose 11 percent to $76.12 per carat.
