BMC in drive to develop feedlot industry

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has said it wants to develop the feedlot industry in Francistown to get the right quality and quantity of cattle for the European Union (EU) market.

BMC Francistown abattoir plant manager, Bosiela Saudu said told the press last week that currently they dependent on the South African market but they want to easily meet the requirements of the lucrative EU market.

"We want to expand our market so that we are not dependent on one market. At the moment, we have five feedlots," said Saudu. He told reporters that at the moment, they have set up field offices all over the country."They were previously closed but the CEO has re-opened them and that is how we plan to sensitise farmers because at the moment, our farmers are not well educated about meeting requirements of the EU," he said.  Saudu said that Francistown abattoir is supposed to be slaughtering 400 cattle per day but so far they are not meeting the target. "We have designed so that instead of slaughtering everyday, we wait for a couple of days before we slaughter and that way, we can end up slaughtering about 340 or so but we have not reached 400 yet," he said.
