BMC Fails To Exploit EU Market

LOBATSE: Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has failed to fully take advantage of exporting beef to the European Union (EU) duty-free and exploiting the opportunity created by the suspension of Brazil from the market as the global recession forced consumers to look for cheaper sources of protein.

BMC chief executive officer, Dr Motshudi Raborokgwe said on Thursday at the launch  of a new procurement strategy that the global economic downturn resulted in beef prices in the international market remaining static during the year because consumers were forced to eat chicken and pork which are cheaper.

"There is demand in that market because supply is decreasing within the EU but the financial crisis made people to choose cheaper sources of protein," he said.
