Anxiety over investments befalls unions

SEROWE: Nearly a month after government announced a cessation of a raft of services to its employees with effect from December 31, anxiety has befallen public sector unions over the fate of their investments.

Presenting the chairman's report to BOFUS annual general meeting at Lady Khama Hall here on Monday, the president of the Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) and chairman of BOSETU Funeral Scheme (BOFUS) expressed trepidation about government's intended withdrawal of stop order facilities to pay civil servants' loans.

"One of our major challenges today is the move by the employer to withdraw the check-off facility," Shandukani Hlabano said. "At the moment, we have two deduction codes, one for BOSETU and the other for BOFUS, which effect monthly deductions directly from source.
