After Nametso Phonchi has finished reciting one of her poems and has left the stage, it is not uncommon for one to wonder if they should clap their hands or burst into a flood of tears. Her work is profound.

Phonchi was probably the highlight of the day last week when poets mesmerised an audience at Alliance Francaise as part of the countrywide commemorations of Month of Youth against AIDS.One could tell from the beginning of her performance that the young poet was set to touch many. Her poem was titled Innocently Staying Blood Lines; a piece that was dedicated to children who are either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

She told Showbiz after her performance that she gets inspiration for her poetry mostly from what she sees and hears. Speaking about her performance that night, Phonchi said she created a poem for children because they have been forgotten and are not recognised. She refers to children as 'innocent souls'.  She explained that most of the time, they are infected with HIV as a consequence of their parents's behaviour. She prides herself with writing poetry about issues that affect women and children; she also writes about love.
