Mokoka on the rebound

It has been a while since you last saw a banner on the street bearing the name Shirly Mokoka or stories in the local media about her. This is because the lanky boranka singer has been busy studying both academically and as a musician.

Mokoka has just completed her Diploma in Adult Education at the University of Botswana (UB). At the same time the 32-year-old has been working on becoming a better artist.  "Most of us call ourselves artists when we are only singers. It is important to be able to play one or two instruments and then you can call yourself an artist and that is what I want to be. Time for playing second fiddle is over; I believe I am above that. I am now playing live with instruments," Mokoka said confidently. Although she can now play the guitar, drum and keyboard, the Kopong woman, however, has admitted that she is far from mastering any.

"I can play a little of each but my interest is on the guitar," she said as she played her debut song Bagolo Bame on bass guitar.Together with Sebongile Kgaila and Godfrey Moeng, who plays Setinkane, Mokoka has been playing at some corporate events in Gaborone and has quite a few more lined up.  Kgaila leads a band, which normally backs Mokoka in her performances.Since she broke into the scene more than fives ago amid tensions with Maxy (Olebile Sedumedi) who accused her of copycatting, Mokoka has only released three albums, the last one being Kgebe Bolela.
