Female saxophonist Akhu proves she is just as good

Hers is a story of a musical journey that has paid off and landed her a chance to play for President Ian Khama at his 60th birthday in February this year.

She is Akhutleleng Mogami and one of the two brave women in Botswana who are known to play the usually male-oriented saxophone. The other one is her fellow Metrophones band member Tracy Bortsie, who is only 24-years-old and 14 years younger.  Meeting for the interview, the woman who is popularly known in music circles as Akhu, arrived with her saxophone still packed in its black case. 

Some of her band members from The Metrophones were already at it, practising for their upcoming show.  Before Akhu joined them, she shared her musical odyssey with Arts & Culture and revealed that amongst her cherished moments she acknowledges the time she performed for Khama at his family farm in Ruretse on his birthday.  She says that although it was hard to rate how the President felt about her performance, since he kept a serious face, striking up a conversation and applauding her on playing the sax after her performance was enough for her to conclude that she had done a marvellous job.
