Bonnington silos project on course

The restoration project that was initiated by the National Museum, the Department of Arts and Culture (in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture) and Thapong Visual Arts Centre to turn the Bonnington silos into an open-air museum is on course.

According to the coordinator Velias Ndaba, the assignment should be completed by the end of this week.  "We have had a few hiccups, but we are confident that we will be able to complete the project before the end of the week," he told Showbiz in an interview.  Ndaba further said one of their challenges was mounting metallic sculptures on the wall because they are hard to drill but he confirmed that they have since had a breakthrough.  Showbiz took time to inspect the silos and found youthful artists at work at the place where they are currently painting murals and mounting sculptures on the walls.  Onkabetse Ompolekeng said that the assignment is one of the greatest challenges that he has had as an artist.  "This has proven to be a tough job because I am afraid of heights," he said.  Ompolokeng swore that the accomplishment of the project is one of his dreams and that he will not quit as some of his colleagues have done.  He asserted that he will finish what 'I have started'.

Of all the artists interviewed, the knight in shining armour was Thato Khomela, who declared that he was not afraid of heights.  Khomela has helped paint the murals and contributed towards the making of the sculptures.  This bold artist, who also happens to be a member of Thapong, asserted that one of his greatest dreams is to see the mission accomplished.  "I am going to stick around until I see this project complete because it is going to be one of my greatest accomplishments ever," he told Showbiz.
