BCW ropes in lawyer to protect Miss Botswana participants

The Botswana Council of Women (BCW) and the companies organising Miss Botswana, Sweet Baint and Pleasant Worthy last Friday engaged a lawyer to explain the terms and conditions of the contract before the contestants signed on the dotted line.

David Abram of Sweet Baint told Showbiz that they engaged an independent lawyer from the law firm Ramalepa Attorneys to give insight to the girls on the clauses in their contracts.  He said that by engaging a lawyer they wanted the proceedings to be transparent and also make it easy for the girls to understand what they are getting into.  Abram further said that the contract is well-meant as it is aimed at ensuring that both parties involved have a mutual understanding.  He explained that the contract serves the interests of both parties as it can always be referred to should a problem arise.  He added that the signing went smoothly more so that parents/guardians and the contestants were able to ask questions and understand the contract terms before signing.

Addressing the contestants and their guardians, Bogadi Ngwako of BCW said that normally when organising the previous pageants they didn't get to meet the parents though there are a lot of activities involved. Ngwako said that sometimes this creates confusion, as parents are sometimes not aware of the activities and what they entail. She added that for the journey of the competition to be smooth, parents need to work together with the organisers and support their children so that they perform to the best of their abilities.  She said that the contract does not only apply to the contestants but also binds them (the organisers) to provide and take care of the contestants during the whole proceedings of the competition.
