Government has been criticised by one local arts activist who says government underestimates and is neglectful of the arts in Botswana.

The chairman of House of Yielding Fine Arts for Youth, Nonofo Ndwapi, said despite many indications that Botswana's arts industry has contributed a great deal to youth development, it does not enjoy much support from government. She said they have tried as the youth to form associations and non-governmental organisations that can improve the arts, but the political leadership continues to sideline them. Ndwapi lead a movement that is set to promote literacy in performing and visual arts.

Ndwapi said she is sick and tired of politicians only use the arts when it is convenient for them. She cited the use of artists at political rallies, only to be abandoned later. The young lady condemned the joining of certain musicians to the BDP. She said although she acknowledges that it is their personal choice, she also believes they should be looking at their political affliction from a bigger perspective than only as a "temporary solution to their problems".
