A fire from the gun after the shot. Gunshot
BDF Director of Protocol and Public Affairs, Colonel Fana Maswabi, confirmed the death but did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the incident. “The Botswana Defence Force regrets to inform members of the public of the unfortunate death of a service member following an incident involving a service rifle at Glen Valley Barracks,” he said in a media release. “The incident happened in the early hours of Monday, October 26, 2026,” reads the statement.
The BDF said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate action. “The BDF extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and urges members of the public to refrain from speculation pending finalisation of investigations by Botswana Police Service,” the statement further reads. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that the deceased, reportedly of the rank of Sergeant who was off duty but dressed in uniform, entered the barracks at around 2am, allegedly took a service rifle and turned it on himself.
