The Obama Celebration That Never Was

It was supposed to be a night to remember - the celebration of Barack Obama's inauguration as the first black president of the United States of American (US), but only a few turned up and the evening was a dull affair.

A lot of tables were empty, especially the reserved ones, and no one could explain why people would shun such an event given the hype and festivities that followed Obama's victory over Republican Senator John McCain and ultimately being sworn-in as the next occupant of the White House in Washington DC two weeks ago. Perhaps the low turnout could be attributed to the fact that the event was held at Tsholofelo Community Hall in Gaborone's Ginger Township, Broadhurst. One would have expected the organisers to give it the glitz and glamour that it deserved, especially that tickets were going at P150 per person.  If it had been hosted at one of the air conditioned hotel conference venues with dim lights in the city, it could have probably attracted a lot more people. Good music would have also played a bigger part in attracting a huge crowd or at least for those who attended it could have cheered them up and left good memories about the event. But bringing some relatively unknown quantity in one Anji to come and mimic Whitney Houston and Lauren Hill's tracks was not the best of choices. But to be fair to the artist, she tried her best under circumstances. Franklyn Moyo also performed at the event.

Various African dishes were on offer but only a few seemed to be enjoying themselves.
