Now Dikhwaere goes contemporary

In recent years, Borankana, the traditional Setswana music has been boosted by the infusion of modern instruments and lyrics. This has increased profits, made the genre to grow in leaps and bounds and produced stars in the process.

Kgobola, Ditholwana and Mogwana Traditional Dance can rightfully claim the crown as pioneers in the infusion of modern material in the music. However, the stars of the genre are Culture Spears and Machesa. While Culture Spears are undoubtedly the country's most sought after traditional group, Machesa have already tasted international success by winning a KORA award. It was through the same music genre that Maxy - Olebile Sedumedi - rose to stardom.

Since last year Dikakapa, a traditional dance group composed mainly of soldiers from the Sir Seretse Khama Barracks has been dominating the airwaves giving Culture Spears a run for their money. Before the Borankana wave can crest, three soldiers have entered the scene with another traditional music genre - Dikhwaere. They have infused modern material in the music and so far, they are making waves in the Kgateleng area.
