Clay utensils back in vogue

If you ever thought that clay utensils were relics of the past you had better think again because they are back in fashion, thanks to a Gabane-based pottery company that continues to reinvent the so-called archaic technology into something that appeals to the discerning connoisseur.

Recently a gathering of University of Botswana (UB) academics, as well as dignitaries at the UB Foundation dinner enjoyed beer and tea served in clay utensils provided by the Gabane potters. Company representative Jeffrey Dubwe says 650 clay cups were ordered for the UB event, and he emphasises that the clay utensils are in vogue once again.

The clay utensils however do not look exactly like the prototype as the technology has been improved to match the ever-changing lifestyles and hygiene. The inside of the utensils, whether it is a cup, sugar bowl, or flowerpot have been modified with glazing, so that they look more like ceramics. The glazing has enabled them to come up with traditionally decorated clay pottery that is not only admired as a work of art for home or office decoration but also as something that customers can use on a daily basis or special occasions.
