New BDP youth executive appointed: no elections held

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) youth wing ushered in a new youth executive committee (YEC) this weekend, in a compromise decision that left no room for elections despite disgruntlement by some members.

While inside sources revealed that there were four lobby groups ahead of the congress interested in contesting for the YEC positions, the party leadership opted for compromise appointments as they feared further factionalism in the already troubled party.

The party leadership confronted the four groups with a compromise proposal that was agreed at the party council last month.  Three groups agreed to have a compromise list, while one group led by former YEC deputy chairperson, Ditlhapelo Tshotlego, was against this move. Tshotlego was apparently persuaded to bend towards the compromise decision on Friday night to avoid the anticipated chaos that would have come with elections.
