Mookodi’s candidature came under scrutiny, with question marks over whether he could stand as an ‘elder’. According to those close to the electoral process, he was treated as a ‘special case’ thus sparking confusion amongst the GU faithful.  “That one is a special case, and it has confused a lot of people. The constitution is silent on the matter but normally elders do not stand for an executive position but, instead, form a committee of elders which is headed by the president,” a source said.

Elders’ committee secretary general and one of the overseers of the electoral process, Mompati Ngwako said the club’s constitution does not bar anyone who has been a member of the club for two consecutive years, hence elders are allowed to stand for any position although it has not been common practice in the past.

“The constitution does not bar anyone from standing for the elections. There is no way we could have denied Mookodi’s candidature because the constitution is not clear on that. But I should acknowledge that has not been common practice that an elder stands for the elections,” Ngwako.  Mookodi will face interim committee chairperson, Boitumelo Nsunge

for the position. Kgomotso Monageng, Donald Seleke and Tamocha Lenyeletse will stand for the secretary general position while Onyana Mafojane and Alexander Rakhane are gunning for the treasurer’s position.

Moreetsi Gaborone, Moffat Mophuting and Lonke Herbert will be competing for the club president seat. Over 450 members will cast their votes in the crucial meeting. The outcome of the elections may determine former investor, Nicholas Zakhem’s future at the club.

Zakhem has shown interest in assisting the club as an investor, with him taking total control of GU’s affairs for the next 15 years. It was revealed at a press briefing in Gaborone on Wednesday that the elders’ committee had sent a counter proposal to the property mogul, which he is yet to respond to.

“There are other entities, who want to come on board either as inventors or sponsors. We have received many proposals that we are still looking at, but we are surprised that it is the Zakhem proposal that is regarded highly. A decision on this matter will be taken after the meeting on Saturday,” elders’ committee member, Tymon Katlholo said.
