March 27, 1996: Basarwa spokesmen John Hardbattle and Roy Sesana addressed the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva about the problems facing their people. John Hardbattle died later that year, on November 11.

In 2002, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples Rodolfo Stavenhagen visited a resettlement camp and found that the Basarwa were victims of “discriminatory practices,” and were being “dispossessed of their traditional lands”.

Later in 2002, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination expressed concern at the “ongoing dispossession of Basarwa/San people from their land.”
