Chiefs face exit as GU, Rollers stamp authority

Traditional giants, Township Rollers and Gaborone United (GU) edged closer to the Mascom Top 8 semi-finals with comprehensive victories in the first leg of the quarterfinals while Mochudi Centre Chiefs’ trip to Selebi-Phikwe ended in a nightmare. The other quarterfinal is on a knife’s edge with BDF XI and Police XI deadlocked at 2-2. The start of this season’s knock-out competition saw 14 goals in four matches.

Rollers and GU are all but guaranteed places in the last four after convincing away victories.

Rollers crushed Motlakase Power Dynamos 3-1 in Serowe on Friday night, while a Kgololo Kgogobi-inspired GU whipped a hapless Satmos 3-0 in Selebi-Phikwe on Saturday.

GU’s Namibian import, Benson Shilongo netted his first goal for his new paymasters after playing just two matches, while Abednico Powell and Ronald Chikomo grabbed the other goals for Rahman Gumbo’s side.

The coach declared his side has done enough to progress to the next round.

The weekend’s exciting match was on Sunday when Nico United brewed a shocker, thumping fancied Chiefs 3-0. Midfielder, Richard Legwaila was the toast of the mining town with a superbly taken hat-trick in the second half.

with devastating effect and dealt efficiently with a docile Chiefs attack. Nico captain, Monametsi ‘Sunday’ Kelebale, named man-of-the-match ahead of Legwaila, told Mmegi Sport the margin should be sufficient to see them progress.

“We did not expect to win by a wide margin. We had expected a close encounter. The 3-0 win should be sufficient, but we know we will be playing a team capable of scoring three goals in the return leg,” Kelebale said.

The Nico victory was almost marred by reports that the players had not been paid outstanding allowances. Players could be seen waiting outside the stadium well after the match had ended. However, a Nico official said the players had been paid their outstanding dues.
