BISA to introduce volleyball libero

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) national volleyball organiser, Daniel Tshume has said they will introduce a libero in senior secondary schools games.

Officiating at a teachers’ umpiring clinic held at Mater Spei College recently, Tshume said they have not used the defensive player although it is sanctioned under Federation International of Volleyball (FIVB) rules. A volleyball libero remains in the game at all times and is the only player not limited by rules.

Tshume said they want to introduce a libero to allow players who cannot execute other specialised duties like attacking and setting to express themselves in areas they are competent in.  “A libero is a unique player whose role is to receive and cover up for his teammates. He or she is recognised by the different kit he or she wears in a game. A team is allowed two libero players with one allowed to play at a given time,” he explained.
