BotswanaPost chief executive officer, Cornelius Ramatlhakwana has said the Southern Africa Postal Operators Association (SAPOA) games, which start today at the Molepolole Sports Complex are meant to develop sports and empower youth in the locality.

“The games would also contribute economically to the country through sports tourism as the visiting countries would be lodging in the area. The games are also meant to showcase the cultural diversity in the country. This would also encourage a healthy lifestyle for our employees,” Ramatlhakwana said at a press briefing in Gaborone yesterday.

The tournament attracts teams from Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia while South Africa cancelled its participation at the last minute for unexplained reasons. The three countries will compete in five sporting codes amongst others; football, netball, volleyball, athletics and a marathon. “We would also have fun games like the egg race and tug of war. We would like to encourage the public to come in numbers and support our teams,” he said.
