Mudongo's Dreams Dashed

Botswana's dreams of having a woman representative at the World Cup were dashed when Boikhutso Mudongo lost two consecutive games in round six and seven at the just-ended Africa Chess Championships in Namibia.

Mudongo fell to Egyptian Woman International Masters (WIM) Sohir Basta and Mona Khaled. The two losses left the Botswana Woman FIDE Master (WFM) with 3.5 points, and with two games left, her hope was to make the top five. For defending champion and Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Tuduetso Sabure of Botswana, this is one tournament she would like to forget in a hurry.

As has been the case in recent months, the WGM once again failed to rise to the occasion in Namibia. She lost most of her games with the white pieces. This is an unflattering result in chess, as white's advantage of the first move is usually utilised very effectively.
