Mafu was appointed Chiefs coach at the beginning of last season on a two-year contract, but he has to enjoy an extended holiday in his native Zimbabwe due to financial struggles at the Mochudi club. Mafu has been one of the first casualties of Chiefs’ dire financial situation, as in June he told this publication that the club has defaulted on some of his wages but he was willing to stay at the club.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport yesterday, Chiefs general manager, Clifford Mogomotsi confirmed that Mafu has not joined the team for the pre-season but denied that the 51-year-old mentor has left the club as he is owed by the club. “We cannot deny that we have a situation at our club. But Mafu is still with us. He has a running contract with us. He has not abandoned us.
