Gaborone Marathon targets 4, 000 runners

Organisers of the Steinmetz Gaborone Marathon (SGM) are targeting a record 4, 000 runners this year. The marathon, set for May 5, has been growing in leaps and bounds since its inaugural three years ago.

Race director Stellan Bengtsson told Mmegi Sport in an interview yesterday that they have extended the registration deadline to April 26 in order to reach their target. Over 3, 100 participants, among them elite runners, leisure runners and sport enthusiasts in general have already registered for the grand marathon.The initial deadline for registration was extended to April 15 but was stretched further to allow people more time to register.

Bengtsson said at the rate enthusiasts have been registering they remain hopeful that they will register 4, 000 participants by next week. He said should they hit the target earlier than anticipated they would close the registration. Apart from the main 42 kilometre event, there will be a 21 kilometre half marathon, 15km and 10km events as well as the 4km fun walk and run. Among those expected to grace the event is former Africa's record marathon winner Gert Thys from South Africa and other renowned runners from Kenya and Ethiopia.Bengtsson said preparations for the marathon have been going well and the city will be ready for the marathon with volunteers already mobilised.
